Garður and Sandgerði 6 May
I woke up early this morning to drive to Garðskagi and Sandgerði. There was a really nice morning sun and lots of birds. Here are some shots from the trip.
Few passerines and gulls
The birds are busy these days. They are either building nest’s or already started to feed they’r young’s. It is not peak season yet, its a good start for the summer and hopefully it will continue like this.
Snipe, Ptarmigan, Blackbird and Starling
Few from today. Got some nice closeups. Almos perfect day for bird photography. Started with an early morning sun. Then around 9 am, just before the light got to harsh, clouds started to diffuse the sunlight.
Crossbill, Raven and Eagle
Few shots from March. The very first migratory birds are starting to arrive but it is still winter with limited light and weather to photograph.
2008 Leftovers
I have been spending some of my spare time going through and organizing older albums. Doing so I spotted few keepers that I might have missed in the past. Why I missed them I dont know, maybe we just evolve and see things differently… here are few images from 2008
Redpoll
Changes complete
Layout changes are now complete. Also the Icelandic version of the side is complete.
Few changes and more to come
February 3
I have been working on updating the images and making an Icelandic version of the side. All the Images in the Birds and Landscape albums have now been updated. The problem before was that the images were in various size’s. Now all of them should be 1200 pixels on the longer edge. With the Icelandic version comes a new layout on the website (you can already see the new layout by choosing Icelandic Language). When the Icelandic site is complete I will make the same layout to the English site.
Even tough it is still just the beginning of February I am getting very excited about the spring and all the migratory birds to arrive. The days will get longer and I will have more time to spent with my avian friends
Few birds Sunday, January 22
Manage to get a little time off today to check out few birds. The highlight was Long Eared Owl in Reykjavík.
Finally something new
I have been busy with work and me and Inga where moving to another apartment. The truck needed a modification that I will maybe post about later. So there has been very little time for photography and also this is the time when daylight hours are really short. The sun only just makes it up to the horizon and then back down again. This makes light extremely limited, but I managed to get some time of around the Christmas holidays and try to capture some of the low light winter mood.
Bratti
17 September. I was driving members in Ársæll SAR team to the hut Bratti in Botnsúlur. The purpose of the trip was to check the condition of the hut and the possibility of restoring it. Bratti is rather old, somewhere around 1980. It is locate in the valley Súlnadalur 800m high in the mountain.
Gæsavötn trail
weekend trip 12-14 August. A bit of a crasy drive. We took off on Friday evening and drove to Nýjidalur in Sprengisandur. On saturday we drove from Nýjidalur and took the trail Gæsavötn to Askja. From Askja we went to Kverkfjöll, then back and to Herðubreiðarlindir. We spent the saturday night in Laxárdalur in Mývatnssveit. The on sunday we drove to Akureyri and the over Kjölur to Reykjavík. Major part of the weekend spent driving. We got all sorts of weather sun, wind, rain, fog, snow…..
SAR Highland Patrol in Fjallabak
24-29 July. Me and Inga are both voulenteers in the search and rescue team Ársæll. There are many teams like this in Iceland and each summer the patrol the highlands 1-2 weeks at a time each team. There are several teams stationary on 4 places in the highland the help travelers, check road conditions, river crossings, visit huts to check for visitors and many other things.
East Iceland
8-15 July me and Inga spend some time in the East of Iceland. We stayed the first night in a trailer at Laugarvatn that is about an hours drive from Reykjavík. The morning after we got news that one of the glacier rivers that comes from Mýrdalsjökull had flooded and damaged the bridge on Highway 1. We were planning to go throught there so we had to take another rout through the montains. The next night we stayd at Fjallsárlón lagoon, this is near the famous Jökulsárlón lagoon but has less visitors. It was really nice to stay there in the sunset, watching group of Barnacle goose and listening to the ice crack in the lagoon. On Sunday we visited Lón and Fossárdal in Berufjörður where we spend the night by a waterfall. We drove up the valley when looking for a place to camp and saw some Reindeer’s high up in the mountains. On monday we did quite a distance and drove many of the east fjords: Breiðdalsvík, Stöðvarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Reyðarfjörður, Eskifjörður, Norðfjörður (Neskaupstaður) and from there we went to Egilsstaðir, Borgarfjörður and Loðmundafjörður where we staid in Skúmhattardalur a remote valley where we had amazing weather. That same day we also visited a small bird cliff in Höfn in Borgarfjörður where I got some time to photograph Puffins. After having a relaxing time in Skúmhattardalur we went back to Egilsstaðir and visited Seyðisfjörður and Mjóifjörður. Later that day we met friends at Eiði for a short time. It was late that evening and we where trying to find place to camp that the 2nd rear axle broke in this summer. We had to stay just off the road during that night and get spare parts with flight from Reykjavík the day after. This delayd us for some time but there is nothing to do about that. After exhausting day and replacing the rear axle we stopped by a swimming pool in Selárdal to relax a little. We then spend the night with friends at Þistilfjörður. The next day is Thursday and we went to Langanes, Skoruvíkurbjarg and Fontur. We had a fog on Fontur but we got a nice view at Skoruvíkurbjarg. We then continued to Melrakkaslétta and then to Ásbirgi where we spent the night. On Friday we went to Húsavík and the to Mývatn. The original plan was to go from there to the highlands but there was zero visibility due to fog and heavy rain. We changed the plan and decided to go west. On the way there the weather was getting worse so again we changed the plan and simply went home to relax the last day we had planned for this trip.
Snæfellsnes July 2011
My girlfriends mother family and a family meeting during the weekend 1-3 July. I really had a limited time for photography but me and Inga went for a drive on Saturday and I visited Svörtuloft bird cliff on Snæfellsnes. The lighting this weekend was actually horrible this weekend so I ended up spending more time with Inga and her family
Siglufjörður weekend trip
Me and Inga wanted to take a weekend off to relax a little. I borrowed a small apartment june 24-26 at Siglufjörður where we spent the weekend. We took a short drive to Eyjafjörður on Saturday. Early Sunday morning I got some time to photograph some birds. Later on Sunday we were planning to take the mountain road over Kjölur back home but on our way there we got into some trouble. The left rear axle shaft decided to divide it self with 2….. about 3 hours drive from home….. there goes the relaxing Sunday drive. It took me about an hour in the phone to find a spare axle that I could borrow so we could get back home. My parent’s decided to have a long Sunday drive and brought the spare axle to me and Inga and about 5 hours later we were back on track. Arriving home at 2 am we where exhausted and Inga got about 2 hour sleep before going to 10,5 hour night shift.
Thor’s day, June 23
June 23, Thor Day, there was a Thingblot at Thingvellir in Iceland. This is a common religious ritual done by those who believe in Asatru (pagan/heathen). Me (heathen) my sister Krístín Alísa (heathen) and my girlfriend Inga Rúna (christian) decided to attend the ritual.
Northern Wheatear
I have been watching nesting Northern Wheatear in Heiðmörk for few days in mid June. It is a small and quick moving insect eater nesting in holes in rocks and lava. So far I have only used the morning sun that is actually behind the nest, I will probably visit it once more with evening sunlight. The nest is well hiddin inside 8000 year old lava that provides great nesting grounds for the Northern Wheatear and many other birds. These are also getting used to my presence like so many other nesting birds have have followed this summer. I have managed lay on the ground with my camera about 5 feet away while they feed the hatchlings again and again.
SAR day trip to Þórsmörk June 19
Drop dammage
This is what happens when a heavy lens falls to the ground. My beloved 500mm lens fell to the ground with a camera body and the 1,4x converter. The image below is taken with the 1,4x converter and it seems that the converter is screwing things up badly. I managed to adjust the 500mm lens with the Spyder Lenscal and the in camera AF Microadjustment. The center resolution is ok but I will have to take a better look at the resolution at the edges. I will take the lens to work soon to have a look at it, there is a abnornal sound coming from the USM and the MF ring is not ok. Lens mount and fixed barrel will likely need to be replaced.
Flói Nature Reserve
Me and my sister Alísa went for a early morning trip to Flói Nature Reserve for bird watching and photography. It was June 13th and we took of from RVK 5 in the morning annd it is about 40-50min drive to Flói. The weather was really good for bird watching, it was almost still, just a little breeze and overcast. Well that’s good for bird watching at least but not the best for photography. I managed to get few shots however.
Breiðafjörður and Borgarfjörður
Me and Inga went for a weekend trip to Breiðarfjörður and Borgarfjörður 10-12 June. I really didnt take many pictures on this trip but these places are really beautiful and with lots birds. We spotted a few white tailed eagles, short eared owl’s and arctic fox.
Common Blackbird on a nest
Sorry for the annoying background sound from the nearby container :/ I was watching this birds and photographing it for several days and she really got used to me being there. Me and my sister sometimes gave her bred, apple, worm and more
Small birds and cold summer
It has been cold for the last few days in Iceland. The weather has not been really good for photography. There was a little sun yesterday and this morning and I managed to get few shots
Raritie in Heiðmörk
I was photographing birds in Heiðmörk to day June 3rd when I came across Wood Sandpiper by coincidence. Appearantly there where two of them spotted later that day at same location.
More lovely Birds
I have spent the last few days capturing behavioral pictures of birds on nests and feeding youngs in Heiðmörk and around Elliðavatn.
Birds 22 and 23 May
I spent some time in Heiðmörk and Álftanes this weekend, looking for and photographing birds. I got few pictures of our beautyfull Great Northern Diver and probably the most remarkable thing was a Slovanian Grebe that arrived to Lake Elliðavatn this morning and started building a nest few hours later. They have not nested on this lake for so, so many years. There is no record of them nesting on Lake Elliðvatn since tha dam was build in 1926.
Volcanic Activity in Iceland
21 May 2011 Mt. Grímsfjall in Vatnjökull glacier became active this evening in Iceland. Grímsfjall is one of the most active volcano in Iceland, last eruption was in 2004. This picture is taken out of my kitchen window, the ash cloud can be seen behind the clouds, it is really far away so compared to the size of it there is a massive activity.
Update: The eruption officially ended May 28, It was short but powerful, weary typical for Mt. Grímsfjall
New Bird pictures
It was snowing on the morning of April 30th in Reykjavík, migratory birds are already starting to arrive some time ago. This can cause a special mood, no wind, snow falling slowly to the ground dampening the surrounding noise. Me and Inga decided to go out for a short drive on this lovely morning, I took my camera with me hoping to capture some the mood and the late winter snow… or early summer snow if you prefer it that way. There where migratory birds everywhere and they where just loving the weather…. the short drive ended 5 hours later
Now we have a web page
April 24th 2011
Things are slowly coming together and I am happy with the results so far.
There is a new album from this weekend
Still working
10 April 2011
I have not given up yet, the site is still under progress. Just taking a little bit more time than I expected. I have added a little info about my self and also added info/text to the landscape and birds albums.
